Forest History Society Staff

The Forest History Society's (FHS) knowledgeable staff works cooperatively to help everyone understand the many ways in which humans have interacted with the environment over time. Throughout our history, the varied expertise of our staff members has ensured that our programs in research, publication, education, and special events are successful.

  • Steve Anderson, President and CEO (stevena@duke.edu)

    Forest economist and former Oklahoma State University forestry professor Steven Anderson joined the FHS staff as president in 1997. He oversees all FHS programs, events, and projects.

  • Andrea H. Anderson, Administrative Assistant (recluce2@duke.edu)

    Andrea Anderson is the Society's office manager and has worked for FHS since 1991. She supports the President and handles membership matters and book orders. Hers is the cheerful voice you hear most often when you call the Society.

  • Raymond Carnley, Vice-President for Development (raymond.carnley@duke.edu)

    Raymond joined FHS in September 2006 coming from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He oversees the Society’s development efforts including annual fund, membership, planned giving, major gifts, and the current Stories of the Forest Capital Campaign. His 12 years of experience as a fundraiser are complemented by a lifelong appreciation for our natural resources strengthened by several years spent working for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

  • Elizabeth Cox, Development/Administrative Assistant (etc8@duke.edu)

    Elizabeth joined the staff at FHS in the spring of 2007. As assistant to the VP for Development, she maintains the membership database and aids in any other donor-related matters. She also assists the editorial staff of the journal Environmental History.

  • Katherine M. Cox, Assistant Director for Administration (kcox@duke.edu)

    Since joining the FHS staff in 1984, Kathy Cox has been the Society's bookkeeper and is responsible for managing the Society's payroll and financial records.

  • Dave Gunderson, Volunteer

    Dave is a forester with a love for forest history. After being an avid reader in the FHS library for several years, he began helping out with various projects in early 2006.

  • Elaine Hammond, Volunteer

  • Elaine is a trained librarian who is interested in the environment. Since early 2009 she has helped organize materials in both the library and archives.

  • Eben Lehman, Technical Archivist/Librarian (eben.lehman@duke.edu)

    Eben joined the FHS staff in September 2007. He works with the digitization and cataloging of the historical photograph collection, manages the FHS Environmental History Bibliography, and produces EAD finding aids of archival collections. His previous archival work includes several years with the Missouri State Archives.

  • Jamie Lewis, Historian (jglewis@duke.edu)

    Historian James Lewis was a freelance writer prior to joining the FHS staff in 2003. He researches and writes book-length projects on forest and conservation history, edits the Society's magazine - Forest History Today, provides reference assistance, and handles other special writing and editing assignments.

  • Cheryl Oakes, Librarian/Archivist (coakes@duke.edu)

    Librarian Cheryl Oakes is the director of the Society's library and archives program. An FHS employee since 1990, she manages the Society's research resources and provides reference assistance to staff and patrons alike.
